At Armijo Elementary, we use high-quality instructional programs and research-based strategies to build strong readers, writers, mathematicians, scientists, and bilingual learners. Our curriculum provides students with consistent instruction while allowing teachers to respond to individual student needs.

Heggerty - English & Spanish

Phonemic Awareness

Heggerty provides students with daily, explicit practice with phonemic awareness—the ability to hear, identify, blend, segment, and manipulate the sounds in spoken words.

Builds strong early reading foundations
Develops listening and sound awareness
Includes rhyming, blending, segmenting, and manipulating sounds
Used in English and Spanish to support students' literacy development
Provides short, engaging, consistent daily practice

Savvas myView Literacy - English & Spanish

Reading, Writing & Language Arts

Savvas myView Literacy provides students with a comprehensive literacy program built around high-quality texts, reading, writing, vocabulary, speaking, listening, and language development.

Builds comprehension and critical-thinking skills
Provides opportunities to read a variety of genres and text types
Develops vocabulary and academic language
Connects reading and writing
Provides opportunities for students to cite and explain evidence from texts
Available in English and Spanish to support our bilingual/dual-language learners

Goal: Develop strong, independent readers and writers who can understand, discuss, and communicate ideas using evidence.

Synopsis of Dual Language & General Program

Dual Language

Parents with children from any language background may select this option. This choice is a long-term commitment (K-5) since the benefit of Dual Language education takes 5-8 years to fully develop. Students who do not have any Spanish language ability are not accepted into this program after Kindergarten. Fluctuations in enrollment may be cause for the administration to determine if students must be exited from the Dual Language program. In this event the school will utilize a placement criteria developed for the Dual Language Program.

Goals

Students will become bilingual and bi-literate and will achieve proficiency in all academic subjects in Spanish and English.

Program Design Bilingual Seal

Children study and learn in both English and Spanish. We employ the 80/20 model. Students in Kindergarten use the 80/20 model, 1st grade students are instructed in the 70/30 model, 2nd grade uses 60/40 model and 3rd-5th grade uses the 50/50 model. Students are expected to reach grade level standards in Reading, Writing, and Math in BOTH languages by the end of fifth grade. English dominant, Spanish dominant and bilingual students work together, learning from each other.

Bilingual Seal

When students complete the 5th Grade Bilingual program, they will receive their Elementary Bilingual Seal.
