At Armijo Elementary, we use high-quality instructional programs and research-based strategies to build strong readers, writers, mathematicians, scientists, and bilingual learners. Our curriculum provides students with consistent instruction while allowing teachers to respond to individual student needs.

Heggerty - English & Spanish

Phonemic Awareness

Heggerty provides students with daily, explicit practice with phonemic awareness—the ability to hear, identify, blend, segment, and manipulate the sounds in spoken words.

  • Builds strong early reading foundations
  • Develops listening and sound awareness
  • Includes rhyming, blending, segmenting, and manipulating sounds
  • Used in English and Spanish to support students' literacy development
  • Provides short, engaging, consistent daily practice

Goal: Help students develop the sound skills they need to become confident readers and spellers.

Savvas myView Literacy - English & Spanish

Reading, Writing & Language Arts

Savvas myView Literacy provides students with a comprehensive literacy program built around high-quality texts, reading, writing, vocabulary, speaking, listening, and language development.

  • Builds comprehension and critical-thinking skills
  • Provides opportunities to read a variety of genres and text types
  • Develops vocabulary and academic language
  • Connects reading and writing
  • Provides opportunities for students to cite and explain evidence from texts
  • Available in English and Spanish to support our bilingual/dual-language learners

Goal: Develop strong, independent readers and writers who can understand, discuss, and communicate ideas using evidence.

Ready Math

Mathematics

Ready Math builds students' mathematical understanding through problem solving, reasoning, conceptual understanding, and application.

  • Develops strong number sense
  • Builds understanding of mathematical concepts
  • Provides opportunities to solve real-world problems
  • Develops mathematical vocabulary and reasoning
  • Encourages students to explain their thinking
  • Supports differentiated and small-group instruction
  • At Armijo, we place a strong emphasis on number sense and place value, helping students understand numbers before moving toward more complex mathematical applications.

Goal: Develop confident mathematicians who can solve problems, explain their thinking, and apply mathematics to new situations.

Mystery Science

Science & Inquiry

Mystery Science engages students in hands-on, inquiry-based science learning. Students explore questions about the world around them and develop their understanding through investigation and discovery.

  • Encourages curiosity and questioning
  • Provides hands-on investigations and activities
  • Connects science to real-world experiences
  • Develops observation and reasoning skills
  • Encourages students to make predictions, investigate, and explain their findings
  • Supports the development of scientific vocabulary and communication

Goal: Help students become curious scientists who ask questions, investigate, and use evidence to explain the world around them.

Estrellitas

Spanish Early Literacy

Estrellitas is an early literacy program designed to help Spanish-speaking students develop foundational reading and language skills in Spanish.

Students build their understanding of:

  • Letter and sound relationships
  • Phonological awareness
  • Spanish vocabulary
  • Early decoding skills
  • Oral language
  • Reading readiness
  • The program provides students with a strong foundation in Spanish literacy that supports continued reading development.

Goal: Build confident Spanish readers while strengthening the foundation for bilingualism and biliteracy.

UFLI Foundations

Phonics & Word Reading

UFLI Foundations provides systematic, explicit phonics instruction to help students understand how letters and sounds work together to read and spell words.

Students practice:

  • Letter-sound relationships
  • Blending sounds to read words
  • Segmenting sounds to spell words
  • Decoding unfamiliar words
  • Encoding and spelling
  • High-frequency words
  • Applying phonics skills when reading connected text

UFLI provides teachers with a consistent instructional sequence while allowing them to respond to student needs.

Goal: Give students the phonics skills and strategies they need to become accurate, automatic, and confident readers.

Fundations

Fundations provides children of varying learning abilities with a foundation for reading and spelling. It provides teachers with the skills and tools needed to present a structured, sequential, and cumulative phonics/spelling program using multisensory teaching techniques.

Fundations thoroughly teaches the Foundational Skills of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), and significantly supports other CCSS standards in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language.

As a recognized leader in multi-sensory language programs, Wilson brings more than a decade of systematic and explicit instruction to the K-3 classroom. Wilson Fundations provides research-based materials and strategies essential to a comprehensive reading and writing program.

Ready Common Core Mathematics

Ready Common Core Mathematics helps teachers create a rich classroom environment in which students at all levels become active, real-world problem solvers. Through teacher-led instruction, students develop mathematical reasoning, engage in discourse, and build strong mathematical habits. This math program’s instructional framework supports educators as they strengthen their teaching practices and facilitate meaningful discourse that encourages all learners.

Ready Common Core Mathematics:

  • Encourages students to develop a deeper understanding of mathematics concepts through the embedded Standards for Mathematical Practice
  • Builds on students’ prior knowledge with lessons that make connections within and across grade levels and directly address the major focus of the grade
  • Ready Mathematics 6–8, ©2020 Edition provides additional features for supporting English Learners, such as: 
    • English Language Development guidelines on scaffolding language use during instruction to benefit students at different levels of English proficiency
    • Language routines that integrate language and mathematics
    • Concept development activities that allow students of varying mathematical and English language abilities to build on familiar concepts.
